I got a relatively new toy that I bought from a colleague a week after I arrived back from vacation. I was interested in getting an MP3 player and was already of thinking of ordering online when I saw him pull out his silver . He got it for free from as a promo months ago. If you get them as your bank to have your salary transferred to, a shuffle would be given to you. I wanted to jump on it but decided not to as it would actually be a hassle to do it. Anyway, he told me he wasn’t really using it so I asked him if he would sell it to me. I asked how much and he said QR25. Looking at the price online, it was actually a good price. From Apple, it would cost me US$79/ QR 293 + shipping. I didn’t know yet how much they were selling it here in Qatar then. But being a slick dealer, I pushed him a bit further and asked if he was willing to sell it for QR200. He did agree after a bit of tugging and he doesn’t use it anyway. So I got myself an almost new Ipod Shuffle! Later, we bought found out that they were selling them in for about QR350! I’m sure he’s now shaking his head for selling it to me for QR200!

Here’s what’s playing on the shuffle:
– Sound Track from the Cirque de Soleil showBeatles Anthology
(Beatles)White Album
– Electro-bossa covers of Guns & Roses classicsIrresponsible
– Selected tracksStevie Wonder
– Studio Recording from American IdolAcoustic SongsEtc.

We finally got to see I-Spy Bookshop yesterday. I don’t know if a lot of people at City Center knew about it already because when I asked the staff of Applebee’s they didn’t know about it. Luckily, we dropped by ELC, Early Learning Center and the guy there knew where it was.

From afar, you’ll see a big, brightly-lit signage that says "I SPY BOOK SHOP". The store is bright yet cozy inside. It was bigger than I had imagined it to be. Although it is relaitvely small in comparison to the huge Jarir Bookstore, I would say that I-Spy is spacious enough that people can actually move about while inside. There are other customers visiting the place already. During our visit most of them have children tagging along. The reading corner is already in place. It is surrounded by bookshelves with children’s books, with an area rug and 4 bean bags. Xiane’s dad read about seven small books for her while I checked out the books they have. There were a lot of nice books for kids but I was more interested with activity books for our daughter. We actually bought her 2 books today. I on the other hand got myself my favorite magazines, Ahlan! and People. I’ve been reading a lot of magazines lately. I like Ahlan! because at QR5, it is really cheap and if you’re into the Hollywood buzz, it will definitely keep you updated. People on the other hand gives you a wider scope of news and information. Back to I-Spy, adult books include novels and practical books like "how to’s". I didn’t get to see much of the titles but I learned from the staff that there are more books to come. Right now, they’re still in the process of acquiring their stocks but soon enough I’m sure that there’ll be more to see on their bookshelves.

The next time you’re at City Center give I-Spy Bookstore a visit, who knows you might find something interesting and buy a book or two.

UPDATED:
The laptop has been sold!

A friend of mine is selling a newly acquired Dell XPS M1210 laptop for a bargain price considering the amount it would cost if you buy it from Jarir Bookstore or through the Dell distributor in Qatar. He ordered this online from Dell US and got it shipped it through Aramex by Shop&Ship. All new, unused, no scratches, no thing, less than a week old. The lappie has a 12.1 Truelife WXGA display and weighs a merely 3.6 lbs. thus making it very portable and ultralight. But that’s not all, you get a Core Duo processor, 1 Gb Ram, dual layer DVDRW drive, 80 GB SATA HDD, WIFI, USB and firewire ports! It even has Soundblaster Audigy audio system and has Windows XP Media Center pre-installed! What else could you ask for? All this for a measly QR5500! If you configure the specs of the XPS M1210 on the Dell website to match the one he’s selling, you’d be surprised to know that it would cost you about US$1831 or QR 6683. And that’s without shipment cost. He got a discount coupon when he ordered it so he got it cheaper. Why don’t you check out the prices of laptops, especially the ultraportable/ultralightweight one in Carrefour and Jarir and compare the specs. I just saw some in Carrefour the other night and they’re not even Core Duo machine!

Try calling ***** at ***- **** and see if it’s still available. This is a Qatar number and is only available in Qatar.
