Why not Qatar Airways

Since our annual vacation is nearing, I finalized and booked our flights back home last month. Since we came to Doha, we have been using Qatar Airways as our airline of choice. But looking at what other airlines have to offer, I decided that Qatar airways may not be the best choice after all.

There are two things that annoy me with Qatar Airways. First would be their frequent flier program. Before, it was easy to reach high tier levels and you always get 100% miles even when flying economy. Now, with economy, you either get between 25%-100% of your miles based on the class code for your economy tickets. You might get surprised with this but yes, even for Economy class seats, prices and miles earning are different. Also, I don’t get why Hong Kong gives you more Status Miles than Philippines, which is a longer flight. Duh?

Price –wise, Qatar airways seems to just add more and more taxes to their tickets. Comparing it to other Middle Eastern airlines, flights from Doha to Philippines is expensive. I got a ticket from another airline which is 800QR cheaper than what Qatar Airways is displaying on their website while you save  400Qr for a child ticket. That’s a 2000QR savings for us.

I can’t say anything bad about the service of Qatar Airways. Since you are probably paying more than most airlines, you get good service and reasonable in-flight food. Also, you get direct flights to and from the Philippines at sensible hours.

After weighing all these, I guess it’s time to actually see what other airlines have to offer. I’m not completely saying goodbye to Qatar Airways as we still have to see if whatever pros we’re getting from the other airline is worth changing loyalty to the tried and tested Qatar Airways. But let’s see as I’ll surely report back once we’re on vacation.
