Cost of Living in Doha: Inflation!
In: Cost of Living | Food | Qatar | Shopping
17 May 2011Do you know that the cost of white rice in Doha has more than doubled since 2007? Baby Milk has also risen between 6QR to 12QR. Condiments and Canned foods have also increased in prices though minimal at that.
It has been more 3 years since I last updated Life on the Spot’s Cost of Living in Doha excel sheet but I got the opportunity to grab some of the prices last month when doing the groceries. Mavis was doing the groceries and was, as usual, taking her time to do it so I thought of checking and writing down the prices of commodities while I was in Carrefour in City Center. I was lucky to have had access to my old Cost of Living sheet and was able to check and do a comparison of the prices.
One thing thing that you’d really take notice of would be the price of rice. It’s amazing to see how the price has jumped these couple of years.
| Rice | 2007 | 2011 | ||||
| 5kg | Sunwhite Rice | 17 | 36.75 | |||
| 10kg | Sunwhite Rice | 33 | 84 | |||
Another would be the prices of Baby Milk. We were still interested with the cost of baby milk then as Xiane was only 2 years old when we came to Doha. This is also interesting because a lot of families are being enticed to go to Doha and this should at least give them an idea how much they need to budget for their food.
| Baby Milk | 2006 | 2007 | 2011 | |||
| 400g/can | Progess Gold 3 Milk for Kids | 19.5 | 27 | |||
| 900g/can | Progess Gold 3 Milk for Kids | 36.75 | 39 | 54.25 | ||
A full list of the prices is available for download below. It is an excel file with 2 sheets. The first sheet contains prices we’ve gathered the past years while the second sheet gives you the prices of other food/commodities for 2011.

This is really good and valuable information. However, I’m still a bit unsure if the vegetable prices are by piece, kilo, or pound.
Appreciate if you could add these details into your spreadsheet. Thanks!
