Old meets New in Souq Waqif

Free WiFi in Souq Waqif!

You can now surf the internet for free at Souq Waqif for Free! Qtel now offers free WiFi service to Souq Waqif, which is considered as one of the most traditional markets in Doha. With all the new restaurants and coffee shops abound, I'm sure you'll find a cozy spot to tinker with your laptop. Good, yes. But could be better.

With all the money that Qatar has, why not offer free WiFi across Doha anyway? Several US Cities are already geared towards offering free WiFi to their residents (San Francisco, Philadelphia and Boston). And others have already implented it like St. Cloud in Florida, Mountain View in California, Tempe in Arizona and more.

I think Qatar should even aim to be on the top list of the 10 most connected cities in the world. Doesn't Qatar have more financial resources than South Korea and Taiwan who ranks 1 and 2 respectively? Plus the city of Doha itself is smaller than those two. In South Korea, a 10mbps connection would cost you $20 or QR73.4! Wow! And Qtel keeps on comparing its services to other Middle East countries and ssaying that it provides the cheapest inthe Gulf. But that's thinking locally. What about thinking globally? Currently, a 512kbps costs 200QR. If we were in Korea, that would be 25mbps! Imagine all the movies and TV shows we could download from Torrent!.

Anyway, for those needing a place to surf for free, provided you have a laptop, then head to the Souq. Be sure to bring a jacket as temperature in Doha is now dropping!

Correct...and they don't provide the cheapest service in the GCC. It is much cheaper in Dubai, better value and better services.
