15 Nov 2008The Philippine Embassy in Doha said the old Philippine green passport is still acceptable till they expires, labelling as false the claim circulating through e-mails that old passports won’t be valid from January 2010.
“Whatever notice circulated through e-mail that said the old green passports won’t be valid starting January 2010 is false,” said Rosario Lemque, consul general of the Philippine Embassy in Doha.It can be used until the end of its validity period, which could be after 2010, but we seriously encourage the Filipino community to have the machine-readable passports,” said Lemque.
Lemque added that Filipinos holding old passports will have a hard time when they get to airports abroad by 2010 since the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will begin issuing the ICAO standard machine readable passports automated system to scan travel documents no later than April 10, 2010.
“Filipinos holding the old passports will have a hard time when they travel abroad because most airports will be using the ICAO machines by 2010,” said Lemque.
ICAO, a Quebec-based group, has developed the biometric identification in machine-readable travel documents, including passports and visas.
