Gulf Times – The Khalifa International tennis and squash complex, in Doha, is undergoing a facelift to host the Sony Ericsson Championships from November 4-9, when the world’s top eight singles players and top four doubles teams from the 2008 season will compete for the title and a share of the record prize money of $4.45 million.
Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Dinara Safina and Serena Williams have already qualified to play in Qatar.
The Qatar Olympic Committee has hired Swiss-based Nussli, an internationally leading provider of temporary structures for events, trade fairs and exhibitions, with many years of experience to take care of the Khalifa International tennis complex improvements. Nussli has shipped all the equipment from Switzerland and will build additional 3500 seats, redo the Centre Court, add VIP boxes on the first rows of the Centre Court, build television commentators boxes overlooking the court and make sure that the venue has a world class structure to host the best tennis players.
"We are all very excited with this opportunity to host the Sony Ericsson Championships here in Doha. It is tennis’ year end event, with all the top players competing against each other and for the first time it will be in Qatar. We are committed to making it a world class event and are looking forward to hosting all the public and international visitors in this extended facility," said tournament director Karim Alami. The three daily matches will start at 5.00 pm every day and will be played in front of the main Post Office at the Corniche.
Tickets will be sold from October 12 at the Qatar Tennis Federation building at the Khalifa International tennis and squash complex and at tournament booths placed at the City Centre and Villagio Mall.
