Movie Frenzy
In: Entertainment
18 Sep 2008During our holiday in the Philippines, I got to watch a lot of movies, most of them with my husband. Aside from being one of our favorite pastimes whenever we are on vacation, watching movies in our country is also less costly compared to watching it here in Doha. There it only costs about 100 pesos/10 QR whereas here you spend QR35 everytime you see a movie. Besides, in our country the films are shown in the cinemas on the exact date of their world premiere. Here in Doha, most of the time, the films are shown weeks or months late.
We were able to catch The Hulk (starring Edward Norton and Liv Tyler); Batman: The Dark Knight (starring Christian Bale and Maggie Gyllenhaal); and Wanted (starring Jame McAvoy and Angelina Jolie) on the big screen. After he left for Doha Xiane and I watched Wall-E together. Then on my last two weeks, I got to see two Filipino movies. The first one is A Very Special Love which I watched by myself and the other one is For the First Time which I watch with my mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
Both movies I heard had their screening here in Doha. I’m sure a lot of Filipinos who reside here got to see it too, especially the latter “For the First Time.” I’m sure everyone was as curious as I was to see KC Concepcion’s first movie. KC is a very popular young actress in Philippine showbiz who is the daughter of Sharon Cuneta “The Megastar,” also a well-known celebrity in my country.
So there was I with my in-laws, queuing on the movie’s first screening on its first day of showing which happens to be my last day in the Philippines. It wasn’t the best film but it was entertaining and interesting enough. I would have to say too, that for a beginner, I liked KC’s acting. The film was partly shot in Santorini, a famous tourist destination in Greece. Having watched the movie somehow gives you a feel of Greece. But one thing that made me and my in-laws jump out of our seats while watching the movie was the part when we recognized one sceen in the film was shot in "Casa de Carlo," the same place where we spent overnight in Tagaytay. We were so excited to see the very same bar where we had our photos taken. I’ve written an article about the place for some time now but unfortunately my husband hasn’t published it yet. But I will continue to remind him until he does. It needs some photos that’s why I’ll be needing his help. In any case, I’m glad to have watched For the First Time.
So there goes my movie frenzy. I guess it’s gonna be a long time until we get to see a movie on the silver screen again. With all the downloads that you can get on the net and with the cost of cinema tickets here, only the very best deserves to be seen on the cinema.
