Mothers Day

Mors dag in Danish, Moederdag in Dutch, Muttertag in German, Matru divas in Hindu, Día de la Madre in Spanish; but whatever language it is, Mothers Day as we all know, is a special day when we honour our mothers.  Not that we only allot one day to honour our mothers, Mothers Day is the day when we make extra effort to make our mothers feel special and loved by giving them gifts and celebrating their motherhood.

Little did I know that it is celebrated on various days in many places around the world. I’ve always thought that Mothers Day falls on the 2nd Sunday of May, the same date it is celebrated in the United States and a number of other countries around the world.  Most members of the former USSR celebrate it on March 8; and here in Qatar just like its neighboring Gulf countries, Mothers Day falls on the 21st of March.  For a complete list of countries and the corresponding dates please refer to Wikipedia’s entry on Mothers Day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother’s_Day

But since we wanted to avoid the being caught in the middle of Mothers Day celebration, we decided to do have our celebration a day earlier.  So last Thursday after fetching my husband from the office, we headed straight to City Center so we could celebrate at our favorite Applebees.  On our way to Applebees, we passed by the Cinema and found out that “Horton Hears a Who” is being shown already.  We thought it would be fun to watch and a great treat for Xiane for doing well in school during the second term.  After purchasing our tickets and reserving our seats we went to have our lunch/dinner.  As always we were greeted with a very warm welcome from the Applebees staff which makes dining there so much more enjoyable.  And as always we left Applebees satisfied and happy.

We got to the Cinema and eagerly waited for the film to start.  The three of us had blast watching the film.  It was such a great way to celebrate Mothers Day.
