The Last Straw

11 Dec 2007I’m sure you still remember the thing that I wrote about firing our driver and all. Well, it might have taken me another month since I wrote that article but now I’m happy to say that we are finally not at the mercy of his services anymore.
For the 2-month period that he drove for us, he would miss either bringing us to school or fetching us from school once a week. He would call an hour earlier our supposed pick up time to inform me that he couldn’t come for this or that reason. I guess it’s just unfortunate that something always comes up for him not to be able to do his job and though it may not be his fault, still we always had to find the solution last minute. It was frustrating everytime it happened. You call Karwa only to find out that the next earliest trip would be at 3 p.m. and you need to get to school at 12:15. I always turned to my husband as the last resort. He had to leave the office several times just to pick up our daughter. In short, it’s not something that we signed up for. I mean, we got a transport service so we wouldn’t have to worry about these things, right? But as it turns out, having a transport service was giving us a headache.
Then a week ago something really unfortunate happened to our driver, he lost a member of the family. He asked for the rest of the week off. We understood his situation but once again it was a problem we had to solve on our own. We called several transport services to no avail. It would have been very costly for us to get another transport service, a 4-way trip would cost us about QR 1500-1800 and a daily trip would cost QR100. It was like renting a car. After some serious thought and although I didn’t like firing the driver under this circumstances, Tian and I both decided that I am just going to drive. It would take a lot of adjustments like waking up really early for Xiane and Tian, leaving the house at 6 a.m. since we have to drop Tian off to work, and having to wait in the office parking lot until 2:30 when Tian finishes work. As incentive, Tian is going to give me an extra allowance for driving.
This is my second week of driving and at the end of each day the driving really takes a toll on my body as I get really tired. But as long as we’re safe and free from more frustrations I’ll be ok. It feels good to be holding the reigns once again.

I don’t understand, why Karwa is only available after 3pm. One morning, I brought my car to Industrial Area for service. I called Karwa call center and ask for a cab but the answer drove me nuts. They told me, the earliest availability is only after 3pm.

Same here! Karwa is just useless and inefficient. You cannot count on it especially when you need it the most.
