Consumer Rights

I’m sure we’ve all heard of the phrase "the customer is always right," but whatever happened to consumer rights here in Qatar? Yesterday, I dropped by Family Food Center (FCC) Airport Road. I had to see their Christmas decors and took note of the prices of some items. I wanted to canvass how much the decors cost there so I can compare them with the prices of decors in Dream and Home Center. I was writing down some prices on a small yellow "post-it" paper when suddenly a guy approached me. He was a stuff of the FCC, I just didn’t know what position he’s in. The guy started talking to me. In effect he was telling me that I am not allowed to write down the prices of their items, and if I have to, I should ask their permission first. Can you just believe that! Of course I got pissed but I still managed to talk to him calmly. So I told him why is it a problem when I was just trying to canvass the items. I told him that there’s nothing wrong with it because I’m using it for personal reasons, that I needed to make some comparisons with other stores and that I need to know how much I’ll be spending for the decors. Then he still insisted that it’s not allowed. So I said, I’m not just going to buy a few pieces of christmas balls and decors that’s why it’s imprtant that I take note. I’m glad he stopped because he was starting to get to my nerves. Isn’t that stupid of one store to impose such rules? It is our rights as consumers to do whatever is necessary to make us efficient shoppers. When I told my husband he had the same reaction and told me that that guy was lucky he wasn’t with me that time. No, he’s wasn’t going to punch him on the face but he would have called the manager already. So to all consumers, let us be aware of our rights. Businesses in Qatar are lucky that consumer rights are not as observed here as it is in the US where sometimes it is being abused, but we do expect some respect for customers’ rights.
