Crime: "almost" non-existent. Not to say that there aren’t reports and accusations of house help stealing, illicit affairs, housing/rental complaints and stuff. At times you’d get news of people of the same nationality having disputes. More often, you’d get news of people being tried for hitting/running into someone while driving. There have been “rumors” about a Filipino woman being raped and killed while the attackers also raped the husband but was never really a confirmation of this story in the local newspapers, the Philippine Embassy or Hamad Hospital. Not sure if they’re trying to cover it up or what. You can look at the local news in GulfTimes and the Peninsula to see what they do reports there.
Terrorism in the Gulf: Yes. Sadly, Doha has been bombed once by a terrorist the other year which left one Westerner dead.
But here’s a thought: How many times have been London bombed, or the US, or India, or the Philippines, or wherever. Terrorism is everywhere and you can’t say where they would strike, unless you’re in Iraq! What is worse is, in the US, terrorism might not be your concern that much but crime rate has never been higher. People just disappear, even from their own homes! I think this is scarier that terrorism in itself. When terrorists hostaged some expats in Khobar, Saudi and killed some Western guys the other year, a lot have left but others remained. Those who left were replaced by other westerners. Why did they decide to stay and why do people still come to Saudi? My friends would share the same opinion as me. It is everywhere. You won’t still feel safe if you move back to the US, to the UK or to other Asian countries. It’s the same.
For Qatar, I don’t feel less safe than anywhere.
